Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Eastertide
Acts 14:19-28. Your friends tell the glory of your kingship, Lord – Psalm 144(145):10-13, 21. John 14:27-31.
The Peace of Christ can exist in the midst of conflict
Jesus’ words, while timeless, never smack of cliché, because nothing he says is without a degree of mystery – as befits the words of one who lives in two worlds, temporal and eternal. ‘Peace I leave with you,’ yes, but what sort of peace? ‘Not as the world gives . . . do not let your hearts be troubled.’ Most unusual. Why would anyone be troubled if they have peace? By way of example, he affirms his divine obedience in the face of the crisis to come: ‘I do what the Father has commanded me. Rise, let us be on our way.’ In the reading from Acts, Paul is stoned by the incited residents and dragged out of Lystra, believed dead. After they go, he stands and goes straight back into the town. So, the peace of Christ can exist in the midst of conflict, even at its centre, perhaps because it enables us to participate in both worlds too.
Virtue for the Month of May is ~ Diligence
Doing your best and working hard until you are finished.
Diligence may be described as an attitude exhibiting constant and earnest effort to accomplish what has been undertaken, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a person. Properly defined, diligence is careful and persistent effort.
