Back to School Night

We are so very excited to meet and welcome everyone to Back to School Night ~ September 14 at 6 pm .  We will begin the evening in the Church and then continue at the school.

Mission Statement: Our Lady of the Assumption School Commits itself to provide an education based on catholic values and academic excellence in a caring and safe atmosphere in  partnership with the family and parish  community.

From the Desk of the Principal…September 12, 2023Charity: It is Better to Give than Receive

Virtue for the Month of September is Charity.  The theme for the year is Community.

The virtue of Charity requires us to speak, act, and think with love.  We think of charity simply as a benevolent act of giving.  The most general definition of charity, however, means so much more. Charity in its purest sense means love.  It encompasses our love for God and our love for each other.  Charity is a divinely infused virtue which lets us focus our will to cherish God above all things for his own sake and to cherish humanity for the sake of God.

In our classroom our students will be looking at the virtue of charity exemplified by certain saints. Here are the Saints for the month of September:

In grades TK - 2nd grades will be learning about St. Gertrude.  Her feast day is November 16.  Jesus appeared to Saint Gertrude. She asked Him, “Give me a heart like Yours!” She wanted to show love to everyone, just like Jesus.

In grades 3 - 5 students will be learning about St. Vincent de Paul.  His feast day is September 27.   “Charity is the cement which binds communities to God and persons to one another….”  St. Vincent de Paul.

In grade 6-8 students will be learning about Venerable Laura Vicuna.  Her feast day is January 22. One of her most famous quotes ~ “ For me to pray or to work is the same thing, it is the same to pray or play, pray or sleep. Doing what I have to, I fulfill what God wants of me; and this is my best prayer.”

Week 23  in Ordinary Time

Carissimi: Today's Mass; The Most Holy Name of Mary – The Brighton OratoryMost Holy Name of Mary

Colossians 2:6-15. The Lord is compassionate to all his creatures – Psalm 144(145):1-2, 8-11. Luke 6:12-19.

They had come to hear him

As you move through the day, contemplate who and what you listen to. As you do so, reflect on what you heard and what was revealed. Often we listen to respond. We form a response before we have truly heard. In such a fast-paced world this is understandable, but you can make the decision to listen to hear. What is it that is truly being offered, and is it worth hearing? What wisdom is being offered and how can you treasure this gift? Conclude your day by considering who you would seek out to hear. Surely that person is more valuable than all of the noise that surrounds you. Seek him and listen deeply.

Art Trek

We are looking for parent docents to help volunteer with Art Trek lessons. No art skills needed! It’s the most fun way to get involved in your child’s class and get your parent hours. You’ll first have an art lesson and either go into the classroom and teach it for yourself or aid in set up and clean up. Our first meeting is this Wednesday 9/13 from 8:15am to 10:30. We will meet in the courtyard, be directed to where we will have our lesson and I will be providing snacks. Come and see if it’s for you. If you’re a returning OLA docent, thank you for your continued service! If you have any questions you can email Trinity Shawley at euphony333@aol.com. I’d be happy to provide you with answers to any questions you may have.

Looking forward to seeing you!

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.

More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any  parish in our diocese.  To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org  and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
