Mission Statement: Our Lady of the Assumption School Commits itself to provide an education based on catholic values and academic excellence in a caring and safe atmosphere in partnership with the family and parish community.
From the Desk of the Principal…September 19, 2023
Virtue for the Month of September is Charity. The theme for the year is Community.
Our school is made up of a wonderful community of parents, guardians, students, teachers, staff and clergy. Our goal is to support our parents in the spiritual, academic, social and emotional development of their children. Our school philosophy states this best:
“ We foster students’ social growth and values in order to be productive citizens in the One World. We support parents in their role as primary educators and recognize them as the first presents of the Faith to their children. Teachers, families, and clergy work in partnership to teach self-discipline, social responsibility and respect for life in a setting of quality of Catholic education.”
In our classroom our students will be looking at the virtue of charity exemplified by certain saints. Here are the Saints for the month of September:
In grades TK - 2nd grades will be learning about St. Gertrude. Her feast day is November 16. Jesus appeared to Saint Gertrude. She asked Him, “Give me a heart like Yours!” She wanted to show love to everyone, just like Jesus.
In grades 3 - 5 students will be learning about St. Vincent de Paul. His feast day is September 27. “Charity is the cement which binds communities to God and persons to one another….” St. Vincent de Paul.
In grade 6-8 students will be learning about Venerable Laura Vicuna. Her feast day is January 22. One of her most famous quotes ~ “ For me to pray or to work is the same thing, it is the same to pray or play, pray or sleep. Doing what I have to, I fulfill what God wants of me; and this is my best prayer.”
As a school community we are sending our prayers and condolences to Mrs. Cowan, our seventh grade teacher who recently lost her husband.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the soul of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.
Mr. Shane Cowan
Week 24 in Ordinary Time
Saint of the day: St Januarius
1 Timothy 3:1-13. I will walk with a blameless heart – Psalm 100(101):1-3, 5, 6. Luke 7:11-17.
When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said, ‘Don’t cry’
Jesus responded with instinctive compassion to this woman, aware of the immensity of her loss. Following the death of her husband, she had lost her beloved only son. Her heart was broken. As well, with no male relative, she was alone and helpless in a culture that did not provide any support. She may well become homeless and destitute. Jesus did the unimaginable: he brought her son back to life.
The Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre at Kings Cross in Sydney has, since 2001, saved the lives of thousands of men and women. By its 21st anniversary in 2022, there had been a million injections and 11,000 overdoses without a death. In June 2018, another such facility was opened in North Richmond. The Australian centres join 120 worldwide. Through health care and counselling, clients may move to a healthier lifestyle.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.
More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any parish in our diocese. To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
