Virtue for the Month of October  is Friendship.  The theme for the year is Community.

Friendship clip art | Clipart Panda - Free Clipart Images

Friendship can be defined as sharing a mutual love that seeks the good of the other.  Last month we received a stunning definition of “Charity.’ defining this highest form of love as “Friendship with God.”

Real friendship is virtue based.  Two real friends are mutually dedicated to the pursuit of virtue which is what makes their friendship true and lasting . A true friend helps you become the best version of yourself.  True friendship promotes virtue, excellence and happiness of the other.

Friendship Prayer

 My divine Lord

You call me to a friendship with You.

I thank You for this command of love and accept this invitation.

Help me, Lord, to continually deepen my friendship with Your and help me to base all my friendships only on the commands of this holy love.

Jesus, I trust in You

Week 26th  in Ordinary TimeServe | Mark 10:42-45 - Tricia Goyer

Zechariah 8:20-23. God is with us – Psalm 86(87). Luke 9:51-56.

Jesus’ way is one of invitation and love

Hospitality is a strong theme in the Bible, and there are a number of stories (like that of Sodom) where a lack of hospitality provokes the wrath of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus and his followers are turned away from a Samaritan village. The disciples bristle about this, and recall the destruction that God meted out in the Jewish scriptures.

Jesus, in his response, signifies a break in this older relationship between God and people. Rather than punish those who turn him away, Jesus seeks out a different village. His way isn’t to convert by fire, to demand submission, but to offer friendship in love, and to depart with love if that offer is not accepted.

Today we pray that we might continue to remember that our way isn’t one of domination and punishment, but of invitation and love.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.

More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any  parish in our diocese.  To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org  and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
