Virtue for the Month of October  is Friendship.  The theme for the year is Community.

What are  some ways that  we can foster deeper friendships with those around us and seek friendships grounded in Christ?

Pray: The first thing we need to do is pray for good and holy friendships. Once we have these friendships, pray for these friends and their wants and needs.

Be the Holy Friend you Desire: We cannot give to people what we do not ourselves possess.  This means that we must be ardently striving to lead lives of holiness through prayer, self-sacrifice, the Sacraments, Scripture and working to faithfully live out our individual vocations.

Be Vulnerable:  Be honest about your struggles. Talking about sins that you're struggling with, and seeking their advice are great ways to be vulnerable. You also have an obligation to call your friend out if you see sin in their lives.  This may be even more difficult than talking about your own struggles, but if you really love that friend, you should not hesitate to speak the truth they need.

Friendship Prayer

 My divine Lord

You call me to a friendship with You.

I thank You for this command of love and accept this invitation.

Help me, Lord, to continually deepen my friendship with Your and help me to base all my friendships only on the commands of this holy love.

Jesus, I trust in You

Amen

Spread the Good Word: Luke 11:28 - The Church of Jesus Christ

Jonah 3:1-10. If you, O Lord, laid bare our guilt, who could endure it? – Psalm 129(130):1-4, 7-8. Luke 10:38-42.

Focus on the present

Presence, being present in the moment, not multitasking. Recently a colleague was undertaking some neuroscience study and discovered that multitasking is a fallacy – yes, we can move from one action/decision to another quickly, but not actually do two things at the same time. The other revelation in her study was that the cognitive load on doing many things, making many decisions in short spaces of time, can be harmful to self and others. How many times do we let our brain wander while talking with a person in front of us, not being fully present to the dignity of the person, or the task that requires our full attention only getting intermittent portions? The King of Nineveh got his focus on repentance and that of his whole community – they all did the same thing together and were saved, forgiven by God. Mary focused on Jesus, no distraction, prioritizing his presence over the distractions of hospitality. Jesus teaches us about presence, the authentic dialogue of listening and sharing life with each other, without distractions. Maybe our cognitive loads will be lightened if we are more like Mary and less like Martha?

Flag Football News:

OLA pulled out a 28-20 win against a tough St. Anthony’s team Wednesday October 4th at the friendly confines of OLA field.  Touchdowns by Lukas Devericks,  Josh Barton,  Andrew Von Guten, and Henry Bamieh helped the Dolphins to the win.   Theo Swafford returned after missing the first game and threw three touchdown passes, and OLA used a trick play as the half ended that resulted in a Bamieh pass to Devericks for a touchdown.  The game was still in doubt late into the fourth quarter with St. Anthony’s driving for the tying score when 6th grader Zedihiah Mendez made a spectacular defensive play on Sacred Heart’s fourth down to seal the win.  Evan Barker then had two big runs to run out the clock and seal the hard-fought win.

Wednesday, October 11th OLA plays Sacred Heart at OLA for what is sure to be another close game.

More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
