Fall colored leaves with a Thanksgiving message

"A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues." - Cicero

Mission Statement: Our Lady of the Assumption School Commits itself to provide an education based on catholic values and academic excellence in a caring and safe atmosphere in  partnership with the family and parish  community.

From the Desk of the Principal…November 14, 2023

The faculty and Staff wish all a safe and blessed Thanksgiving Holiday.  We pray that your journeys are safe and your gatherings are filled with love, laughter and joy!

Virtue for the Month of November  is Courtesy.  The theme for the year is Community.

Courtesy is not strictly distinct from the other virtues, but rather a quality to be found in all the virtues.  Components of courtesy can be found in humility, reverence and chastity. It is shaped by charity, the form and guide of all the virtues, into the quality of mercy.

In the classroom we are studying the following saints:

Grades  TK - 2 ~ St. Martin de Porres

Grades  3-5  ~ Blessed Solanus Casey

Grades  6 - 8  ~ Venerable Pierre Toussaint

Week 32  in Ordinary TimeJohn 14:23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. | New International

Wisdom 2:23 – 3:9. I will bless the Lord at all times – Psalm 33(34):2-3, 16-19. Luke 17:7-10.

Their hope was rich with immortality

Today’s first reading speaks of hope, that virtue empowered by trust and courage. In the psalm the people rely on God, knowing he will keep them alive in difficult times. In this reading we hear of the suffering of the upright. God was testing them ‘like gold in a furnace’. The upright will ‘shine out like sparks run through stubble’ and their hope is ‘rich with immortality’.

Today too we see the upright being tested in fire, struggling for a share of the world’s wealth –refugees escaping the clutches of war, people in our cities and in developing countries just trying to survive. They are being tested in fire.

Let us be the sowers of trust and courage in them. Let us be their deliverers of hope.

Dolphin Nation

Flag Football News:

OLA dolphins took the field at the friendly confines of OLA field for their championship game against Sacred Heart on Monday afternoon.

Henry Bamieh led our Dolphins to victory throwing four touchdown passes and running for another.  Lukas Devericks, Theo Swafford (2), and Max Dall scored the other touchdowns.    After the game was tied at 12, OLA scored the next 22 points in a row and shut out Sacred Heart due to stellar Defense from Jack Gorell,  Andrew Von Guten, and Sixth Grader Samiah Schnizier. 8th grader Evan Barker had his best game of the season running for 6 first downs, and not allowing a receiver he was covering to catch a pass.

Brena Caron once again was our starting center and every meaningful snap of the football this season was snapped by her, and her stellar play at center solidified the highest-scoring team in the league.   7th grader Xavier Hutchins came in to play QB on OLA’s last possession, and 6th graders Charlie Dufau, Jack Baker, and Leo Molfetta also got on the field to end the game.

Congrats to 8th graders who won their third Catholic League Championship -  Henry, Lukas, Evan, Andrew, and Max.  Our two-time Champions were Theo and Jack G.   OLA Flag Football has now won 31 games in a row in the Catholic League over the last four years.   It was a great end, for a great team, led by one of the Greatest  8th grade classes in OLA Flag Football history.

Go Dolphins, and Get Ready for Basketball season, where OLA will go for their third straight championship starting with tryouts in December.   Look out for the tryout announcement when you get back from Thanksgiving Break.

Go Dolphins.

Players please return your clean jersey as soon as possible to the school office.

Volleyball News:

Volleyball Team A went undefeated this season earning the first round bye in the playoffs. Watch for playoff game days and times after Thanksgiving break.

Volleyball Team B had a great season. The girls played hard, made new friends.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.

More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any  parish in our diocese.  To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org  and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
