Week 22 in Ordinary Time
“Don’t be anxious about what you have, but who you are…”
St Gregory the Great
1 Corinthians 2:10-16.
The Lord is just in all his ways – Psalm 144(145) :8-14.
Luke 4:31-37.
Live our lives from our deep side
Today has a special poignancy. It is the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and a reminder of the appalling cost of not just that war but literally hundreds of wars since. The readings call us to lives of deep peace. They are about surrender, not aggression. People are caught short by the sure but gentle authority of Jesus. He is the opposite of every power-hungry dictator in history. The evil spirit screams at him; Jesus asks it to be quiet and it leaves ‘without hurting anybody’. Likewise, St Paul reminds us that ‘the spirit reaches the depths of everything’. There are many things in life that close off our depths, to ourselves and others. Fear and violence rank high on the list. The reading invites us to live from our deep side, not our defensive side. ‘We have received the spirit that comes from God.’

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.
More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any parish in our diocese.
