Week 23 in Ordinary Time
1 Corinthians 6:1-11. The Lord takes delight in his people – Psalm 149:1-6, 9. Luke 6:12-19.
The radical nature of the Christian message
Paul’s letter to the Corinthians today says that if you go to the law to solve your problems among genuine Christians, you’ve already lost: ‘It is already a fault in you that you have suits against each other.’ It seems strange that he would need to say it to the Christian community. It shows how much they still had to learn. Paul’s words resonate with the memory of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount instruction, ‘Turn the other cheek’, for he makes the same tough call: ‘Why do you not rather suffer wrong and receive some damage?’ Look around at our society now: how many people are racing to the law courts to defend their reputation or their pride, and what good does it wind up doing to them, really? We see the radical nature – but also the deep wisdom – of the Christian message: this is not the world for victories.
OLA Virtues Program
Each month we introduce a different virtue to our students along with Saints to pray with and learn about. This is the Year of Faith and our theme for the year is Service. The virtue for September is faith ~ Believing in God and all He has revealed.
The Theological Virtue of Faith is the supernatural virtue by which we firmly believe in our hearts all the truths of God as revealed. The virtue of faith enables us to accept as true and choose to live the body of truths that are found in the Creeds and in the teachings of the Church, for these are based upon divine Revelation, which includes both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The power of faith is essentially the power to believe in God’s revelation of Himself and His will for us and to obey that revelation and will.
The virtue or capacity of faith is infused into our souls, along with sanctifying grace, when the Sacrament of Baptism is received. Even the baptized infant possesses this virtue, although he/she will not be able to exercise it fully until he/she reaches the age of reason. The effect of faith is something called justification. This means that faith perfected by the Theological Virtue of charity brings man from a stage of separation from God into communion with Him and with his fellow human beings in God.
Faith is the permanent capacity to share in the power of Jesus’ obedience to the truth revealed by God, and to use this power to develop habits of supernatural faith. These habits enable us to live our lives in God’s truth and to adhere to His plan and New Covenant for our Salvation.
Saints for the Month of September

His to bring it to completion;

Keeping the Promise Alive
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.
More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any parish in our diocese. To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
