Week 24 in Ordinary Time

Today saints are St Robert Bellarmine and  St Hildegard of Bingen.  Pray for us!

1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31.

We are his people: the sheep of his flock – Psalm 99(100).
Luke 7:11-17.

We all make up the one body of Christ

‘A great prophet has appeared among us.’ Pope Benedict XVI could have said this about St Hildegard of Bingen, one of the feasts celebrated today. Even though St Hildegard lived in 12th-century Germany, she was made a Doctor of the Universal Church some 1000 years later. She was a great woman who had visions and was able to instruct theology through these visions. She was a Benedictine abbess, reformer, preacher, writer, healer, herbalist, composer of music and visionary. Hildegard tells us that her visions occurred while she was ‘awake and seeing with a pure mind and the eyes and ears of the inner self, in open places’. Just like we hear in the first reading today that we all make up the one body of Christ, Hildegard contributed with her wisdom in bringing about the Kingdom of God. May we continue to join in the one Spirit of God through our lives.

OLA Virtues Program

Each month we introduce a different virtue to our students along with Saints to pray with and learn about.  This is the Year of Faith and our theme for the year is Service.   The virtue for September is Faith ~ Believing in God and all He has revealed.

The Theological Virtue of Faith is the supernatural virtue by which we firmly believe in our hearts all the truths of God as revealed.  The virtue of faith enables us to accept as true and choose to live the body of truths that are found in the Creeds and in the teachings of the Church, for these are based upon divine Revelation, which includes both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.  The power of faith is essentially the power to believe in God’s revelation of Himself and His will for us and to obey that revelation and will.

The virtue or capacity of faith is infused into our souls, along with sanctifying grace, when the Sacrament of Baptism is received.  Even the baptized infant possesses this virtue, although he/she will not be able to exercise it fully until he/she reaches the age of reason.  The effect of faith is something called justification. This means that faith perfected by the Theological Virtue of charity brings man from a stage of separation from God into communion with Him and with his fellow human beings in God.

Faith is the permanent capacity to share in the power of Jesus’ obedience to the truth revealed by God, and to use this power to develop habits of supernatural faith. These habits enable us to live our lives in God’s truth and to adhere to His plan and New Covenant for our Salvation.
