Week 30 in Ordinary Time

Ephesians 5:21-33. Happy are those who fear the Lord – Psalm 127(128):1-5. Luke 13:18-21.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ

This opening passage says it all – in relationships be respectful in behavior and treatment of other people, and do so because Christ leads the way. We disparage different generations – lazy millennials, entitled boomers. We talk over each other, not taking the time to understand how precarious the economic future can look for the young, or how the elderly can also feel trapped by an uncertain future for them and worry for their children and grandchildren.

We joke about men never asking for directions, or we tell ‘blonde’ jokes – but how respectful to the other are such jokes? We can laugh with affection at our loved ones’ idiosyncrasies, but when it becomes a put-down perhaps we need to rethink the latest joke or little dig. Positive actions begun in such small ways can become like the mustard seed, growing into a grand tree

OLA Virtues Program

Each month we introduce a different virtue to our students along with Saints to pray with and learn about.  This is the Year of Faith and our theme for the year is Service.

The virtue for October is Reverence ~ Showing your deepest respect for things of God.

Virtue of the Month Reverence:

Moses & the Burning Bush

Fascinated at the scene of a bush at the foot of the mountain burning but not being consumed, Moses draws closer and closer only to hear the voice of God issuing from the bush:

“Take your sandals off for you are on holy ground.”

In our personal prayer we are challenged, like Moses, to take off our sandals before the Face of the Lord; that is, we are to try to shake off the pride and egotism that we inherited from our first parents.

Saints for the Month of October

PK - 2: Saint Hyacinth

Saint Hyacinth was a Polish priest who became a Dominican.  When robbers were coming to attack the church where he lived, Saint Hyacinth took Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of Mary to a place that was safe, even though the statue weighed more than he did! He did this to show his love and reverence for Jesus and Mary.

Gr3 - 5:  Saint Tarcisius

St. Tarcisius was a young altar server who was martyred for his love of Jesus in the Eucharist. He secretly delivered the Eucharist to imprisoned Christians during a time when practicing Catholicism was illegal.

Gr. 6 - 8 : Margaret Clitherow “For I am fully resolved in all things touching my faith, which I ground upon Jesus Christ, and by Him I steadfastly believe to be saved…and by God's assistance I mean to live and die in the same faith.” “I die for the love of my Lord Jesus.”

ALMS (pronounced /ä(l)mz/) is a new OLA committee/club for both parents and students that was created to support the school’s mission to provide its students with a caring and safe learning community that imparts and promotes our Catholic faith to future generations. Through volunteer work and a stronger presence at community and Parish events, ALMS is OLA school’s “do good” committee. As an added benefit, certain programs can earn parent hours! This means you can get involved in the community, teach your kids the value of service to others, and earn parent hours all at the same time. For more information, check out our FAQ or volunteer now

ALMS: Extra Halloween Candy Drive

Expecting an abundance of Halloween candy this year? Then ALMS’ first annual Halloween Candy Drive is for you. Your extra candy will be donated to Operation Shoebox. Operation Shoebox makes care packages for troops deployed overseas. Here’s how it works:

  1. Simply send extra and unopened Halloween candy to school with your child/children in a paper or plastic bag by November 8, 2024.

  2. ALMS volunteers will sort through, package and ship the sweet treats to Operation Shoebox and our troops.

“If you have found honey, eat only enough for you …” – Proverbs 25:16

No parent hours are offered for donating extra Halloween candy, however, student participation automatically makes them an ALMS student member in good standing for the current trimester. Be sure to report student participation.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all clergy, staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children for Adults™ program. The program helps clergy, staff, volunteers, and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse, how perpetrators groom children and young people, and how they, as caring adults, can learn and implement the important “Five Step Plan” to Protect God’s Children in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.

More than 150,000 clergy, staff and volunteers have participated in these training sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Please know you are welcome to attend a training at any  parish in our diocese.  To learn where the training is taking place visit lacatholics.org  and under the pull down menu titled PROTECT/REPORT move your cursor to Safe SafeGuard the Children then to Education and Training.
