From the Desk of the Principal…August 23, 2022
Welcome Back!
What a successful start to our school year. It was wonderful to see everyone on campus greeting each other, taking pictures and getting reacquainted after the summer break. It was great to see our parents reaching out to our new families. We have about 70 new students (TK-8). We are looking forward to a great school year.
OLA Scholastic Book Fair is coming September 6th thru September 9th. Watch for more information in the next few weeks!
This year is our accreditation year at OLA. Our staff is working hard on preparing our ISL Documents and evidence for our visit. We appreciate the input you have given us.
ACS WASC ( Accrediting Commission for Schools - Western Association of Schools and Colleges) ACS WASC accreditation is a process schools use to monitor student learning and set school improvement goals. ACS WASC accreditation is an ongoing cycle of quality. Schools assess their program and the impact on student learning with respect to the ACS WASC criteria and other accreditation factors.
Every six years, accredited schools conduct a self-study and host a self-study visit. The self-study process culminates in the refinement of a schoolwide action plan. Throughout the accreditation cycle, schools are expected to address the schoolwide action plan and demonstrate evidence of acceptable student achievement and school improvement. Appropriate reports and reviews throughout the six-year cycle of accreditation support this process.

Choice Lunch Announcement
We will not have Choice Lunch as an option for this school year. We will be looking for alternative lunch options for our lunch program preferably in the Ventura area. Choice lunch has increased the cost of lunches and has passed on additional charges to the school for not meeting minimum monthly orders.
We will keep you informed as we solidify plans for this year.
Tuesday week 21 in Ordinary Time
St Rose of Lima
2 Thessalonians 2:1-3, 14-17. The Lord comes to judge the earth – Psalm 95(96):10-13. Matthew 23:23-26.
True servant leadership
I was interested to find out that Saint Rose of Lima, renowned for her asceticism and devotion, is also the patron saint of embroiderers. This is because she would do lace and other needlework and sell these handicrafts to raise money for the poor. A reminder, then, that sometimes the humble work of the hands can do God’s work in myriad ways. This contrasts with how the Scribes and Pharisees behave because they are anything but humble. Jesus excoriates them because they neglect the weightier matters – justice, mercy and faith – by being concerned with the trivial and the execution of the small rigid legalisms of Jewish religious practice. He calls them hypocrites because they want to be seen to be good, without necessarily being good at heart. He calls out their superficiality and false appearance. He suggests that they clean both the inside and the outside of the cup which means that true outward goodness starts on the inside and is illuminated on the outside. Jesus also uses humor to make his point calling them blind guides and saying they would strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. This is amusing imagery, a comedic touch for his audience. They could see that their religious leaders were showy and shiny, not humble and heartfelt. This is a timeless lesson for us as we watch various forms of leadership around the world and see that it is true servant leadership that binds people together as a cohesive worshiping community.
