Virtue of the Month of October ~ Studiousness
Our school participates in a Deanery wide program which highlights a particular virtue of the month along with particular Saints for each grade level - Grades PK - 2 St. Albert the Great, Grades 3 - 5 St. Thomas Aquinas, and Grades 6 - 8 St. Edith Stein. The virtue for this year is Hope and the theme for this year is Study.
Studiousness: Seeking knowledge to grow closer to Truth.
To be studious is to be appropriately eager to study. It is having the desire to apply one’s mind to something; to learn about it, to know it, so that one may understand it. To develop, foster and have the virtue of studiosity is a good thing. It is just as natural and proper for humans to desire knowledge, as it is to desire the pleasures of food and drink. Ultimately we all desire to know that which is true, that which is Truth itself; and that Truth, which is God, wishes us to know him.
Study = the keen application of the mind to truth.
October is Respect for Life Month.
In our sanctuary the students in grades TK - 8 have created two beautiful banners that hang below the choir loft. Please take a look up at our students' engaging and artistic work.
Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few
What is it that holds us back from offering peace to all whom we meet, from offering healing and from announcing the kingdom of God among us? Do we feel unqualified or unworthy? Do we feel scared and apprehensive about opening ourselves up to ridicule and hostility? Do we feel weighed down or busy? We are invited to travel lightly through this world so that we can more readily and easily offer peace to those whom we encounter without worrying how it will be received. The need for peace and healing and good news is always so great. Let us respond generously to the invitation from Jesus to travel lightly, casting off what weighs us down, so we can more readily share with others the good news that God’s peace and healing and reign are near to us.
Parking Lot Update
On November 2, 2022, the church has scheduled for the parking lot and back of the school to be surry sealed and painted. This should not impact morning drop-off or afternoon pickup too much. The only catch is the exit. For that day only we need all parents to exit out onto N. Dunning street and not through the church parkng lot on Telegraph Rd.
Scouts at OLA
Our Lady of the Assumptions Cub Scout Troop is open to all Kindergarten to 5th grade boys and girls that are interested.

The Pumpkin Bowl is coming! Monday October 31. OLA’s annual pumpkin bowl is a fun kickball game played by the 7th grade class vs the 8th grade class. Come cheer on the teams, we will have a prayer and national anthem at 10:10, the game will begin at 10:15 on the Bonaventure Field. Please check in through the OLA school office.
Scrip is back! Purchase gift cards and use them for gifts (you can get your Christmas shopping done all in one place!), or even just your everyday purchases. There is no additional cost involved, and OLA School earns a percentage from each gift card purchased.

Emails were sent out through RaiseRight (be sure to check junk mail folders as well). Use the link to set-up your personal account. Once registered, you can purchase gift cards online. Gift card orders will be submitted on the 5th and 20th of every month. The gift cards will be delivered to the school when they arrive and sent home in the brown envelopes. Shipping usually takes 7-10 business days. If you would like to pay by check please make your check payable to OLA and send your payment to the office by the 4th and 19th of the month. As an added bonus, earn one parent hour for every $200 in gift cards purchased!

What’s Happening with our Student Council!
This month the Student Council is planning a service project called “Socktober”. They will be collecting new socks the week of October 17th to be donated to Many Meals for distribution to the homeless. Socks can be brought in by the students and placed in the collection boxes in front of the trophy case.
Halloween Assembly is coming on Monday October 31st. The assembly will start at 8am in Mulcahy. Please follow the costume guidelines provided by your students' teachers.

Hot Lunch Information:
Our new hot lunch program is going well! Here are a couple of tips to ensure your child receives their lunch.
You must choose OLA when ordering. If you do not choose OLA a lunch ticket is not printed and processed.
Please use the “special instructions” or “comment” sections to note your child's name and grade.
For any Thursday orders, if your child will have lunch and is staying for EDC, simply list EDC after the name and grade.
When it comes to payment make sure you get a confirmation that payment has been completed and the order is accepted.
Thank you to all our wonderful parent volunteers for helping distribute the lunches! We can always use extra hands.

The EDGE Kickoff was a HUGE success! Greetings OLA Parents, Peace and grace be with you. More than DOUBLE the amount of youth we were expecting showed up last Wednesday with a whopping 71 middle schoolers checking-in for the event! Combined with the EDGE Core Team and a handful of parent volunteers, there were over 80 people in attendance. Even Fr. Leon & Fr. Matthew got in on the action! OCTOBER CALENDAR WED Oct. 19th - EDGE Drop-in from 6:00pm-7:00pm [Mulcahy Center]: Come meet the EDGE Adult Leaders and join them in some Large Group Games and IceBreakers. Parents AND Middle School Youth are then invited to join us from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm in the church for the parish-wide XLT event (see flyer below). Rumor has it there will be Chicken Nuggets from Chick-Fil-A, light refreshments, and fellowship following Benediction! Fall Harvest Raffle In today's envelope, each family will be receiving 20 tickets for our Fall Harvest Raffle. These tickets are $2.00 each and can be sold starting today through Friday, Nov. 4. More information is on the memo attached to the tickets. We hope every family will participate in making this raffle a success. 
The first visit of the Pumpkin Trolley will be on Friday, Oct. 28th during the morning snack break. Turn in at least 20 tickets by that morning and your child will get a treat from the Pumpkin Trolley that day! Fall Harvest Cornhole Tournament, Family Picnic, and Concert! Sign-up forms for the Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, November 5th, are in today's envelope. 25 teams of two can compete for some awesome prizes including a set of OLA Cornhole Tournament logo bean bags! Get your friends and family members together to compete to see who gets the Cornhole bragging rights. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be awarded! We are lucky to have our own school family dad, ?????, and his yacht rock band Nautical Thrust performing a live concert for us at the Fall Harvest Cornhole Tournament and Family Picnic. Admission flyers are also in every Family envelope. Participating in the Cornhole Tournament is not required to attend the Family Picnic. In addition to the live concert, we will have picnic meals (limited food sales day of the event), outdoor games including our famous Cake Walk (this year participants can win single desserts but we will also have desserts available for sale in case you don't win at the CakeWalk), face-painting, bubbles, ball games, the Raffle Drawing, and more! We hope to see many families there! T-Shirt Contest Winner and Pre-Order Forms Congratulations to Izabella Tretko in 2nd Grade, the winner of the T-shirt design contest!!!! The Second place winner is Celeste Del Cid grade 2, and Third place is Cherise Burns in grade 7 . Their drawings will become the school’s Thank You cards. Izabella’s design will be used for our OLA T-Shirt. Students who purchase this t-shirt can wear it for the rest of the school year on PE days.
